Nothing to lose.That's the point.

There is no money at Playtide. No deposits, no prizes, no wagering, nothing for sale. What's left is three games, a lock that won't open itself, and a score called Intel that is worth precisely nothing the moment you close the tab.

The standing order

This is a game.
It is not gambling.

Every operation here is played with Intel — a free score kept on your own device. Intel cannot be bought, cashed out, transferred, traded or redeemed for money, goods or prizes, because there is nothing here to redeem it against.

No stake goes in, so nothing can come out. If you are looking for a site where you risk money, you are on the wrong one, and we would rather you knew that in the first ten seconds than the tenth minute.

Read: keeping it fun

Active operations

Pick a file.

Three are cleared for the field. The rest are still being written. Everything runs in the browser — no install, no account, no wallet.

Three steps, no wallet

Step one

Take a file

Open any live operation straight from the browser. There is no sign-up wall and nothing to install.

Step two

Work it out

Each game is won by reading information, not by luck alone. Intel goes up when you solve; it goes nowhere when you don't.

Step three

Beat your own record

Your best run per operation is saved on your device and shown on the station board. That's the whole prize.

Registry · all files

Operations

Six files on the registry. Three are playable now. Every one of them is free, and none of them involve money, stakes or prizes at any point.

Note on content

These operations are fiction. The agencies, cities, couriers and targets described here are invented, and any resemblance to real services, organisations or people is coincidental. Nothing on this site is training, tradecraft or advice of any kind.

Live console

The console

Three operations, one console. Switch files at any time — your best run for each is kept separately.

Station board

Standings

A friendly ranking, kept for amusement. Your best run is stored on this device only, so the board resets if you clear your browser data.

# Agent Station Best file Intel

Agent names other than yours are illustrative and do not represent real players. Intel is virtual, carries no cash value, cannot be exchanged for anything, and may be reset when scoring rules change.

Clearance ladder

Recruit (0) → Courier (500) → Field agent (1,500) → Station chief (4,000) → Double-O (10,000). Clearance is decoration. It unlocks nothing, costs nothing and is worth nothing.

Field manual

How each file works

Read this once and you'll never need it again.

◆ Cipher Lock

A four-glyph lock, drawn from six candidates. Repeats are allowed, so there are 1,296 possible combinations and you get eight attempts.

After each attempt the lock reports back with pegs: a filled peg means one glyph is correct and in the right slot. A hollow peg means a glyph is in the code but sitting in the wrong slot. Pegs are never in slot order — that would be too easy.

Tap a glyph to place it, tap a placed glyph to remove it, then open the lock. Faster solves and fewer attempts are worth more Intel.

◉ Bug Sweep

Sixteen rooms, sixty seconds. Listening devices wake up one at a time and transmit if you leave them alone for too long. Clear them.

Some of the hardware is ours. Green units are friendly — hit one and you lose points and a little dignity. The devices get faster as the sweep goes on.

⌖ Tail Pattern

Your target crosses six waypoints in a set order. Watch the route once, then repeat it exactly. Every round the route gets one waypoint longer. One wrong turn and you've lost them.

What Intel is

Intel is a number kept in your browser's storage on your own device. It is not a currency, not a balance and not an account. It cannot be bought, sold, gifted, withdrawn, or exchanged for money, goods, services or prizes. Clearing your browser data deletes it and we cannot restore it.

The Agency

Playtide is a small studio that makes free browser games about spies. We are eleven people spread across Lisbon, Tallinn and a room above a bicycle shop in Bristol, and we have been shipping small games together since 2019 under other names.

Why we built it

We wanted the specific pleasure of a spy film — the lock, the tail, the sweep of a room — without the thing that usually gets bolted onto it. Most sites that borrow this look eventually ask you for a card number. We decided at the start that ours never would, and then we designed the whole thing so that it structurally can't: there is no payment system, no shop, no balance, no wallet and no prize pool anywhere in the product.

That constraint turned out to be freeing. When a score can't be sold, you can tune it purely for how satisfying it is to earn.

How we're funded

Playtide is self-funded by the studio's contract work. We do not run advertising, we do not sell player data, and we do not take affiliate payments from anyone. If that changes, this page changes first and the privacy policy changes with it.

What we will never do

  • Accept a deposit, payment or stake of any kind.
  • Award money, goods, vouchers or prizes for play.
  • Let Intel be bought, sold, transferred or redeemed.
  • Link out to real-money gambling operators, or take money to do so.

The people

M. Okonjo — studio lead. Wrote the first version of Cipher Lock on a train.
R. Halvarsson — systems and scoring. Owns the argument about how many attempts is fair.
P. Lindqvist — art direction, title sequences, the ring motif.
J. Amara — community and support. Answers the contact form.
Everyone else — see careers, where there are more of us than there were last year.

How we pick games

Every idea that reaches the registry has to pass four tests. Most don't.

1. It has to be readable

A player should be able to explain the rules to someone else after one round. If the pitch needs a diagram, it goes back.

2. Information over chance

We favour games where a thinking player beats a lucky one over time. Chance can set up a round, but it shouldn't decide it. Cipher Lock is the clearest example: the code is random, the solution is not.

3. It must survive having no stakes

This is the one that kills most candidates. Strip out any possibility of winning something, and a lot of game designs collapse — the loop was never fun, the reward was. If a prototype isn't interesting when nothing is riding on it, it isn't interesting.

4. No mechanics that imitate wagering

We do not build games structured around staking a balance on an outcome, and we don't recreate the interface language of betting products. Not because it wouldn't work — because it would, and that isn't what this site is for. Playtide contains no gambling products of any kind.

Have a game you think passes all four? The contact page reaches a real person. We read everything, and we reply to most of it.

Debrief

Questions

Is Playtide really free?

Yes, entirely. There is no payment system on this site. Nothing is for sale, there is no premium tier, no subscription and no in-game purchase. You cannot spend money here even if you want to.

Can I win real money or prizes?

No. Playtide is entertainment only. Every game is played with Intel, a virtual score with no cash value that can never be redeemed, withdrawn, transferred or exchanged for money, goods, services or prizes.

Is this gambling?

No. Gambling requires something of value to be staked on an uncertain outcome. Nothing of value goes in at Playtide and nothing of value comes out, so there is no wager and no prize. It's a game — much closer to a crossword than to anything you'd stake money on.

Do I need an account?

No. Every operation is playable immediately. An optional free account exists only so your Intel follows you between devices; it never involves payment details.

How old do I have to be?

Playtide is intended for adults aged 18 or over. Accounts require 18+. There's nothing here that costs money, but we'd rather keep the audience adult.

Where is my Intel stored?

In your browser's local storage, on your device. It is not held on a server in this demo build. Clearing your browser data deletes it permanently and we cannot restore it.

Why does the site look like a spy film?

Because we like spy films. The dossiers, ring motifs and clearance levels are set dressing on an otherwise very ordinary set of puzzle games. None of it is real, and none of it is training in anything.

Do you sell my data or run ads?

No advertising and no data sales. See the privacy policy for the full picture, including the one analytics cookie you can decline without losing anything.

Something's broken. Who do I tell?

The contact page. Include your browser and what you were doing when it broke, and we'll usually have an answer within two working days.

Keeping it fun

There is no money at Playtide, but habits still matter. A game with no stakes can still eat an evening you meant to spend elsewhere.

Set the length before you start

Decide how long you're playing for and put a timer on your phone. Cipher Lock in particular is designed to make "one more attempt" feel reasonable, and it will keep feeling reasonable for an hour.

Treat the score as decoration

Intel measures nothing outside this page. It is not progress, not status and not an asset. If chasing it starts to feel like an obligation rather than a game, that's the signal to close the tab.

Play it around your life, not through it

Sleep, work, people, food. If any of those are being moved to make room for a browser puzzle, the puzzle should give way.

If this style of game touches something else

Playtide has no wagering mechanics and no games built around staking a balance on an outcome. But if playing here ever prompts thoughts about real-money gambling, or you recognise a pattern from somewhere else in your life, please stop and talk to someone who can help.

  • UK — National Gambling Helpline, 0808 8020 133, free and open 24 hours.
  • US — National Problem Gambling Helpline, call or text 1-800-GAMBLER, 24/7.
  • Elsewhere — search for your national or regional gambling support service, or start with your local health service.

Playtide is not affiliated with any of these organisations; they are listed as a public service.

If you'd like your account and local data removed, write to privacy@playtide.bond and we'll action it. You can also simply clear your browser data — everything this demo keeps about you lives on your own device.

Terms of use

1. Entertainment only

Playtide is a free-to-play games website provided solely for entertainment. All operations are played with Intel, a free virtual score with no monetary value. Intel is not money and is not a payment instrument. It cannot be purchased, sold, withdrawn, transferred, gifted, traded or redeemed for money, goods, services or prizes. Playtide does not offer gambling, wagering, betting or any opportunity to win real money or prizes.

2. Eligibility

The site is intended for people aged 18 or over, or the age of majority where you live, whichever is higher. By using Playtide you confirm that you meet that requirement. We may refuse or close an account where we reasonably believe it does not.

3. No gambling

Because nothing of value is staked and nothing of value can be won, activity on Playtide is not gambling. Outcomes and scores are for amusement. Success in these games does not indicate future success at real-money gambling, which carries genuine financial risk and is a different activity entirely.

4. Intel and clearance

Intel and clearance levels are a limited, personal, non-transferable licence to view score features on this site. They remain ours, confer no ownership or property right, and may be adjusted, expired, recalculated or reset at any time — for example when scoring rules change or when we detect automated play.

5. Accounts

Accounts are free and optional. You are responsible for your credentials and for activity under your account. Do not share it. Tell us promptly if you think it has been accessed by someone else.

6. Acceptable use

Use the site lawfully. Do not attempt to disrupt, overload, reverse-engineer for exploit, scrape at volume, automate play, impersonate others, harass anyone, or upload unlawful content through any form on the site. We may restrict or end access where behaviour harms the service or other players.

7. Content and fiction

All operations, agencies, characters and locations on Playtide are invented. Any resemblance to real organisations, services or people is coincidental. Nothing here is instruction, tradecraft, or legal, financial, security or medical advice.

8. Intellectual property

The site, its games, code, artwork and text belong to Playtide Interactive Ltd. or its licensors. You may play them; you may not copy, resell or redistribute them without written permission.

9. Availability, "as is", and liability

The service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind. Games may change, pause or be withdrawn without notice. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, lost scores, or damages arising from use of a free entertainment service. Nothing here limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited.

10. Changes and governing law

We may update these terms; the version date above will change and continued use means acceptance. These terms are governed by the laws of Estonia, without prejudice to mandatory consumer protections in your country of residence.

11. Contact

Questions about these terms: hello@playtide.bond.

Not legal advice. Playtide is a demonstration site and this text is sample wording written for illustration. Rules covering free-to-play games, virtual scores and age limits differ by country and state. Have a qualified lawyer review your own terms before operating a real service.

Privacy policy

1. Who we are

Playtide Interactive Ltd., Pärnu mnt 22, 10141 Tallinn, Estonia, is the controller of personal data collected through playtide.bond. Data questions: privacy@playtide.bond.

2. What this build collects

This demonstration build has no server-side account system. The only things kept about you are stored in your own browser: your Intel total, your best run for each operation, and your cookie choice. They are not transmitted to us.

3. If you create an account on the live service

We would hold a display name, an email address, a hashed password and your Intel total, in order to provide the service and let scores follow you between devices. Lawful basis: performance of a contract with you. We do not ask for and cannot accept payment details, because there is nothing to pay for.

4. Contact form

In this sample build the contact form transmits nothing at all; submitting it only shows a confirmation. On the live service, messages and the address you send them from would be used solely to answer you, retained for up to 24 months, then deleted.

5. Cookies and analytics

Essential storage keeps your Intel, best runs and preferences on your device. Optional analytics tells us which operations people finish and where they get stuck. Decline it and nothing about the games changes. Full detail on the cookie policy page.

6. What we don't do

We do not sell or rent personal data. We do not run advertising or advertising trackers. We do not build profiles for marketing, and we do not share data with real-money gambling operators or affiliates.

7. Your rights

Where the GDPR applies you may request access, correction, deletion, restriction, portability, or object to processing, and you may complain to your supervisory authority — in Estonia, the Data Protection Inspectorate. Write to privacy@playtide.bond and we will respond within one month.

8. Retention

Local data lives on your device until you clear it. Account data on the live service would be deleted within 30 days of a deletion request, or after 24 months of inactivity.

9. Children

Playtide is intended for adults aged 18 and over and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 18. If you believe a child has provided data, write to us and we will delete it.

10. Third parties

Web fonts are served by Google Fonts, which may receive your IP address as part of delivering them. Self-hosting the font files removes this. Hosting is provided by a European infrastructure provider under a data processing agreement.

11. Changes

Material changes will be announced on this page with a new version date before they take effect.

Cookie policy

Playtide uses very little. Here is all of it.

Essential — always on

  • pt_intel — your Intel total. Local storage, kept until you clear it.
  • pt_best — your best run for each operation. Local storage, kept until you clear it.
  • pt_consent — remembers your choice below, so we stop asking. Local storage, 12 months.

Analytics — optional

A single first-party measurement cookie recording which operations are started and finished, and on what kind of device. No advertising identifiers, no cross-site tracking, no data sold. Declining costs you nothing: every game behaves identically either way.

Advertising

None. Playtide carries no advertising and sets no advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.

Accessibility

We aim to meet WCAG 2.2 level AA. We are not there on every page yet, and this states honestly where we are.

What works today

  • Every game is fully playable by keyboard: Tab to move, Enter or Space to act.
  • Visible focus outlines throughout, never suppressed.
  • Game feedback is announced to screen readers through a live status region.
  • Cipher Lock glyphs differ by shape as well as colour, so the game does not rely on colour perception.
  • Animation, including the title ring and the ticker, stops when your system requests reduced motion.
  • Text reflows to 320px and survives 200% zoom.

Known gaps

  • Bug Sweep is timed, which disadvantages some players. An untimed practice mode is planned.
  • The dossier pages use a typewriter face that some readers find hard at small sizes; a high-legibility toggle is in progress.

Tell us

If something blocks you, write to hello@playtide.bond with the page and what happened. Accessibility bugs jump the queue.
